At Home with the Ovechkins: Isolating Just Like Us

The Coronavirus is keeping everyone home, including our favorite Washington Capitals player, Alex Ovechkin and his family. They may have a bigger house than most of us; however, they still have to stock up on groceries, deal with empty shelves, and find a way to exercise and keep healthy. Nastya Ovechkina, who is pregnant with their second child, does a great job of posting about Ovi and infant Sergei on Instagram so we don’t miss a thing!

Alex Ovechkin is on Pace for a Historic Season

Age and daddy time being undefeated doesn’t apply to Alex Ovechkin. Ever since hoisting Lord Stanley’s Cup on June 7th, Ovechkin is playing like a weight as big as an 800 pound gorilla is off his shoulder. A lot of people thought Ovi’s numbers were going to regress moving forward once he hit age 30. It looked that way starting out going from 50 goals in 79 games in 2015-16 to just 33 the next season in all 82 games until Ovechkin arrived in great shape prior to last season’s training camp. The summer workouts paid off as Ovechkin came flying out the gates with seven goals in his first two games of that season, including back-to-back hat tricks.  Continue reading “Alex Ovechkin is on Pace for a Historic Season”

Washington Capitals Training Camp Day One Highlights

Washington Capitals and Hershey Bears Day one of training camp 2018.

The Washington Capitals officially returned to the ice Friday at MedStar Capitals Iceplex (MCI) where the kicked off day one of training camp. The rink was full of fans and media to capture the start of their journey to back-to-back. We will have other reports about specific players and squads; this is just a summary of the things that caught our attention – not necessarily technical analysis, just good old Capitals fun.

Missing from camp on Friday were John Carlson and Lars Eller who the Capitals reported were out for “lower body” injury. Eller left the ice on Wednesday and did not return. Not sure what happened to Carly as he looked good when last we saw him on 10 September. Additionally, the Caps report that Sergei Shumakov is working through some visa issues.

Dmitry Orlov, Capitals Defense for the Future

Dmitry Orlov now has six seasons with the Washington Capitals. The last three have been his most solid seasons in the NHL, going with the Caps to the playoffs all three seasons. Orlov, who was drafted by the Capitals in 2009 played his first game in the NHL 21 November 2011 and scored his first NHL goal  January 15, 2012, wearing his original number 81 jersey.    Orlov changed to the number 9 prior to the 2014 season, the number he wore in Russia on the KHL’s  Metallurg Novokuznetsk team.

Alexander Ovechkin: Our Kid Lifts the Cup

The centerpiece of the Washington Capitals Stanley Cup win has to be Alexander Ovechkin. The quirky captain is the heart of the team. He is the one who leads the team. We may not see it in public, but have no doubt, his teammates feel the challenge of keeping up with this superstar.

His is the face we love.

Watching him raise the Stanley Cup for the first time we couldn’t help but feel like he represented the hopes and dreams of many parents around the world. He was “our kid” out there. We watched him grow from a silly party boy into a leader of men, a husband, and as we hear- soon a loving father himself. We felt such pride and joy for our guy.

Many of you have had fun and positive exchanges with this famous Russian. He remains true to himself and true to his homeland- even when people in the US have been put off by his political friendships. We have always found him to be friendly. Rushed, busy, focused- yup. And that may have not always endeared him to the fans. Sprinkle on a lot of trash-talk by the media, and you might think he is a snob and unapproachable.

Some of us have had really good experiences with him. He is always very gracious with the Caps Fan Club- happily signing things to help raise money. He loves children and has reached out to help here and in Russia. Frankly, we pretty much adore him.

And we love his winning nature. That is who he is- the product of two driven people, he always strives to be his best. We have seen him break record after record as he cements his name in Hockey history. He sets a high bar for others to follow under.

This video pretty much sums it all up!

And now we get to celebrate with him on the greatest of milestones. And soon we will see the next generation of Ovechkins when he and Nastya welcome their own little one. We can’t wait to see those pictures we know they will proudly share with all of us, their ‘extended family.’

Many continued blessing be on you Alex and your family.

Alex and Nastya Ovechkin: A Love Story for All Caps Fans

This past weekend we saw just how incredibly in love Alex and Nastya Ovechkin are when they celebrated their marriage in a BIG way. The two-day event began with a lovely ceremony and ended with an boat cruise with close friends and fireworks, because, why not!?!?!?!?

img_0544But before there were all the fireworks on the river, there were fireworks between these two lovebirds. We all remember that Alex was previously engaged and felt so bad for him when he failed to make it to the altar that time. So when we saw that first shy post on his Intagram account, we were hopeful that he had found love again.

Pretty soon they were posting pictures that revealed the budding romance. We were fingers-crossed that this was going to bring our captain lasting joy. By now most of his teammates were getting married and having children.

img_0514 In an interview with Sov Sport, Nastya revealed that they met for the first time in 2008 at an Olympics Committee meeting–she was 15 at the time. They became friends, often talking via phone. In February 2015 the two met again in Los Angeles and they realized that they were much more than friends. Alex became more acquainted with her family and quickly won their approval for the relationship. And she became close to his family too, which is important for Alex who is very close to both parents.

Before you knew it, Nastya was a fixture on her Sasha’s arm – traveling on vacations and to award ceremonies in Las Vegas. She became part of the Caps crowd at Kettler and Verizon Center. She and Dmitry Orlov’s wife, Varvara, are great friends, knowing each other before they were involved with the hockey players.

Nastya is accomplished in her own rights. She had a successful career as a model and still does occasional work. She explained in the Sov Sport article that she “graduated from the VGIK, I have received a specialty producer.” In other articles she has said that her priority is being at her husband’s side and therefore, has not further pursued her career in that area because it would mean time apart.

She enjoys living in Washington and those in the area often run into them at the mall, the pet store, or hanging out around McLean, VA where they make their home. They are always cordial to Ovechkin’s fans.

img_0525You know something special is happening when a girl bonds with her guy’s pooch!

Nastya was the first to break the news of their engagement with the reveal of her gorgeous round-cut diamond ring in September 2015. Then came the long wait for the wedding.  img_0527

“This is happiness.” By August 28, 2016 they posted a picture with their wedding rings. Friends confirmed with us that they were married in a very private ceremony and would plan a larger celebration the following summer.

Mrs. Ovechkin is part of the Capitals community, participating in wives and girlfriend events. And of course, there is the sweet relationship she has with young Jonas – son of Sigi and Marissa Smily.

Finally, there was the weekend-long dynamite celebration of their marriage with most of Moscow., that we had been waiting for. Click here and here for more photos.

It has been fun to see their love blossom. Thankfully, they both love social media and have given us a glimpse of their special love and life together. We wish them many blessings as their love, and family, grows. Ovi has always talked about wanting a big family so we are hoping that will be the next big news from this lovely couple!!
