Anyone watching NHL hockey knows the name Alexander Ovechkin, especially if you are part of the Eastern Conference. He has inspired a new generation to become hockey players and hockey fans- especially in his homeland Russia. Now he has a new title: NHL Ambassador to China, where he will be heading in early August. Continue reading “Alexander Ovechkin: The Face of Global Hockey Named Ambassador”
We launched this media outlet at the start of the 2015/16 season because we wanted to showcase the best moments of the Capitals in photos. Players, other blogs, and fans were already using and liking the pictures our photographer, Brittney Marcum, took at practice and during games so we thought, why not just create our own site to share those great for the fans, and of course the players.
Our name, Friends in Cold Places comes from a joke that Tom Wilson and Michael Latta liked and used so many of our pictures that we had become their “friends” around the ice–their private photographer. In these photos- Brittney took a picture of Latts, it was picked up by the Caps on the jumbo-tron during the next game, he liked it, so we printed it and gave it to him to honor his grandmother. And a new website was launched!!
We added a few stories about the Capitals that we thought you might want to read, and here we are today. We still take lots of photos and we love writing stories about the Capitals, the Hershey Bears, and the experiences we have following them. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoy taking photos and writing.
So, excuse us now if we toot our own horn a little bit! Continue reading “They Like Us, They Really Like Us (Our Caps photos that is)”
Former Capitals player Michael Latta announced via twitter that he will be playing for the Kunlun Red Stars in the KHL this season.
Latts was released by the Capitals in 2016 and signed with the LA Kings. He was ultimately sent down to their AHL affiliate and has played the last several seasons in the AHL. Most recently he played for the New Jersey Devils AHL affiliate, the Binghamton Devils. He did not receive an offer from an NHL team this offseason.
The Red Stars are a Chinese hockey team which became part of the KHL in 2016. The team is located in Beijing, China. Latta has signed a one-year contract with the team.
Tomas Kundratek, formerly of the Hershey Bears and Capitals is also on the roster so at least Michael will have a friendly face meeting him there. The roster shows six Canadian (including Latta), two Americans, and diverse international representation of players.
Latta told his hometown press he was ready for a change: I’m not going to miss the AHL at all. I was kind of bored by the end of it, playing three years in Washington [for the NHL’s Capitals] and with being sent down, I didn’t get a chance to get back to the NHL.” See the full article below:

Michael Latta is leading the K-W Alumni training camp in Waterloo. Latts has long supported building youth hockey in the Kitchener community, along with other alumni from the Kitchener Minor Hockey League. This is his fourth season with the camp. As part of the camp, Latta and other NHL players Mike Hoffman of the Florida Panthers, Logan Stanley (his cousin) of the Winnipeg Jets visited children at Grand River Hospital Pediatrics Centre. The boys will run a silent auction on 13 July to raise funds the Centre. Continue reading “Former Capitals Michael Latta Supporting Home Community”
As you all know, Michael Latta is still one of our favorite players. Even though he may be in California. In case you didn’t know Latts is currently playing for the Ontario Reign, the AHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings. Luckily we have some awesome followers who sent us some photos of Latts in his uniform. So without further ado here are some great photos of our guy:
Huge thanks to @LeaMaggio on Twitter for sharing her photos with us!
Dear Los Angeles,
You may not be aware of this but your team just acquired a true gem in Michael Latta. Latts, as we here in DC call him, is one of the hardest working players around and won’t ever stop fighting (literally and figuratively) for the team. Latta was a fan favorite here and we want to clue you in on some things you need to be aware of before day one of training camp in El Segundo…
1. Latts is the nicest guy you’ll ever meet and he is always willing to stop for a photo with fans. He is also very humble when it comes to meeting fans and talking about his game.
2. He’ll stick up for his teammates… (Click the link)
3. He makes a great friend..
4: He makes really excellent funny faces
5. He loves his family.
7. He has a really cool dog named Walter
6. For some reason he REALLY likes ketchup…
As sad as we are to see Michael go, we really do wish him ALL the best with the Kings and hope he will be given the chance to be the incredible player we know him to be.
All this being said, please please PLEASE take good care of our boy. Ask him to take photos, tell him how amazing he is, and know that there are so many fans in DC counting on you to make him feel at home.
We love you Michael LAtta and hope you go on to do GREAT things that we know you are capable of.

By now you all know that only one of the duo that makes up the Caps Roomies received a qualifying offer by today’s deadline. That person was Tom Wilson.
We here at FiCP are having an especially hard time coming to terms with the loss of Michael Latta so we thought we’d share some of our favorite moments from this past season with Latts.
So many memories with Latts from this season but our favorites came after practices when Michael would take a few moments out of his day to talk to fans. He will be greatly missed by us and we are sure by you as well. We wish him all the best in his future career and hope to see him back on the ice even with another team.
Change is coming to the Caps this week. Between the draft, trades, and upcoming unrestricted free agent (UFA) and restricted free agent (RFA) signings and free trades; the Washington Capitals will be doing what they can to create four solid scoring lines. We also expect to see the Caps adjusting the defensive lines to add scoring power on the other end.
So what is all this talk of RFA and UFA? In simple terms, UFAs are for older, seasoned players and RFA’s are for the “young guns” of the team. And everything hinges on the players status by the end of 30 June. According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) of 2013: Continue reading “Caps In – Caps Out: Change is Coming with UFAs and RFAs”
So many incredible moments in this whirlwind of a season, and sometimes there are no words. As the saying goes “a picture is worth a thousand words.” And well, we have plenty so without further ado we have thousands of words to share.
We had happy boys:
And of course, we have those lovely goalies:
Jersey’s off our backs (Karl sporting a particularly awesome outfit):
The boys had loads of fun in practice too:
The Caps roomies never disappoint:
The special jerseys are always a pleasure to photograph.
Mini Chimmer makes his presence known as Tom Wilson and Dad fail to protect the net after practice:
We wil never forget Ovi’s 500th career goal:
By far our favorite moment:
Hard to believe it has only been a couple of weeks since the season for the Washington Capitals ended. Players have dispersed across the globe. Those on social media have done a great job of letting us know where they are.
Here’s what they have shared:
From Russia with Love
Starting with our Captain Alex Ovechkin who having left the International Ice Hockey Federation games (with Dmitry Orlov and Evgeny Kuznetsov) is relaxing home in Russia.
Yes, after celebrating his medal, Ovi is out clubbing again with his fiance, but that’s what Ovi does when he is back with his friends. Party on Ovi!!
And then we have the lovebirds: Ovi and Nastya. Not sure what is happening with his hair but they look happy!!
We know that Kuzy and Orlov go home to spend time with their families during the break. From their season ticket holder discussion, they said they really value the time during break to be with their families because the season keeps them apart.
Stan Galiev on the other hand is still in Virginia. He and his beautiful wife, Olya, are avid bike riders. We have even seen Galiev biking home after practice at Kettler.
We’ll keep our eyes peeled to see if either of our engaged Russians tie the not this summer!
And then we have the Swedish contingency.
No posts from Nicky Backsrom or Marcus Johansson; however, we think they are still in the area. At least we ran into them last week doing family things around town. Andre Burakovsky is home (in Sweden) though and seems pretty happy to be there!
Looks like some of the Canadians have gone home.
Tom Wilson posted from the beach and the Toronto Raptors game with his brothers.
Michael Latta sent out word that he was heading home:
And Mike Richards headed home to relax and fish a little.
Northumberland News reports: “Justin Williams has returned to his childhood home in Cobourg, Northumberland, Ontario where he The Justin Williams Hockey School will run from July 25 to 29 at the Cobourg Community Centre. It will welcome 26 participants born between 2003-05 and 30 participants born between 2006-08. The camp provides youngsters an opportunity to learn skills from Williams, including skating, puck handling, shooting and off-ice conditioning in a positive, fun-filled, environment. launched a hockey camp.”
The break time is also a great time for the players to spend those extra hours with their families. This year the Oshies and Alzners headed to Disney World with their families. We were a bit nervous about Lauren Oshie; she will be delivering the Oshie’s second girl very soon!!
John and Gina Carlson have traveled a little, had a date night, and John took Baby Lucca to work with him for a little skating time.
It looks like Philipp Grubauer might still be in town from the picture he posted a few days ago.
Nate Schmidt is working on his golf game at the Beaver Masters..
We miss our Boyz and will do our best to let you know how they are spending their time. Some of course are waiting to sign new contracts and we will post as soon as we know something new here.
