OOOOOOOO He Did it Again: Ovechkin Records Another 50-Goal Season

Once again Alexander Ovechkin has wowed fans and hockey experts alike with his 50th goal in the 2018/19 season. The Great 8 scored an amazing goal against the Lightning in Tampa Bay. This marks the eighth season that Ovi has scored 50 or more goals in his NHL career. At an age (33) when many players are slowing down, Ovechkin appears to be unstoppable. The who crowd at Amalie Arena broke out in cheers in honor of this incredible hockey player!!

Not content with 50, less then two minutes later he made it 51. It was quite the night with Nicklas Backstrom joining the 20-goal club, and adding one because, why not?!! And TJ Oshie put two pucks in the net himself for a 6-2 lead over the Bolts! Tampa put one more in for a 6-3 final win over their new rivals.

With this goal, the Capital’s captain also moves up a notch in the NHL career stat board to the 13th place (overtaking Brandon Shanahan) of all time goal scorers. Only two players have more 50-goal seasons:  Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy, with nine seasons each.

Earlier this month Ovechkin joined an elite club of 49 NHL players who have recorded 1,200 points in their careers. He shared the moment with fellow-country man Evgeni Malkin who hit the 1,000 point mark a few minutes before Ovi.

When it comes to leaders in the Washington Capitals franchise, there are few stats in which the name Ovechkin has yet to appear. His long-time playing mate, Nicklas Backstrom leads the team in assists; however, Ovi is number two. Peter Bondra still holds at least one franchise records that Ovechkin hasn’t surpassed – 32 short-handed goals. Nor has he robbed Dennis Maruk of his lead for average points per game (1.25 to 1.16) and goals created per game (.49 to .47). Give the Russian superstar time – he could claim those “titles” too.

All this to say that Alexander Ovechkin continues to inspire his team, other players in the NHL and KHL, and young men and women who play hockey.
