Caps Fall to Blue Jackets 2-1 in Overtime

In a close and exciting Metropolitan Division rivalry clash inside Capital One Arena, the latest chapter in the Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets rivalry saw a low-scoring, goalie heavy classic. The Caps ultimately came up short in overtime 2-1 after scoring late in the game to tie it and come away with a point.

The Blue Jackets jumped out in front 1-0 one minute into the game with a breakaway goal from Cam Atkinson for his 25th goal of the year.

The Caps outshot the Blue Jackets 11-7 in the first period but couldn’t get a shot to go in. Alex Ovechkin came out of the game late in the first period and wasn’t on the bench. Ovechkin however did come back to the ice with his teammates for the second period. The middle frame saw the Caps with the edge in shots 9-6 but the score remained 1-0 Columbus.

The score remained the same for much of the final period until Evgeny Kuznetsov scored with a minute and six seconds left in the game to tie it. Kuzy was certainly due and it was his eighth goal of the season.

In overtime Artemi Panaren scored the game-winner and mocked Kuzy’s bird celly.

It’s a rivalry that’s for sure. The Caps look to bounce back on Monday night against the St. Louis Blues.
