MEDSTAR CAPITALS ICEPLEX – The Washington Capitals took took the ice on Tuesday morning to prepare for their contest that night against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Caps are coming off an impressive 3-2 comeback win over the Detroit Red Wings thanks to Michal Kempny‘s late third period goal that ended their brief three-game western road trip. The Flyers meanwhile were shutout at home by the St. Louis Blues 3-0 last night. When the Caps took the ice in Arlington this morning, everyone was marked present except for one. Nicklas Backstrom is sick and the team said he’ll be a game-time decision for tonight.

Caps lines:

The power play will have a different look if Backstrom is indeed out tonight. The first unit boasts Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Lars Eller, T.J. Oshie and John Carlson. The second unit includes Jakub Vrana, Travis Boyd, Tom Wilson, Dmitry Orlov, and Matt Niskanen.

Pheonix Copley will get the start in goal tonight. Coach Todd Reirden is confident in Copley and the way he’s develped this season. This will be his fifth start in the Caps past 11 games. In his last six stars, Copley is 5-0-1 with a 1.95 goals-against average, .935 save percentage, and a shutout.

Another factor is to give Braden Holtby as much rest as he can get before the playoffs. An ideal number for the veteran goaltender would be to play just under 60 games in the regular season.

Puck drop for tonight’s game is at 7:30 p.m.
