Caps Defeat Red Wings 3-1 on Black Friday

michael banner 2Don’t look now. Right when you thought Washington Capitals were going through a Stanley Cup hangover, the team has ripped off four wins in a row. On Black Friday, they protected home ice to deliver a 3-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

The Red Wings struck first at 8:46 in the first period on a goal from Andreas Athanasiou and led the Caps 1-0 after the first 20 minutes but Washington would respond with three unanswered goals. First Tom Wilson continued his hot streak with his third goal of the season at 12:13 in the second period with a great shot going top shelf. Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin were credited with the assists.

In the third period, Michal Kempny would give the Caps the lead for good with another blast almost similar to the one he scored on Wednesday night for his second goal of the season at 6:38 in the third. Like Wednesday’s win which came against Kempny’s former team, his goal Friday would turn out to be the game-winner. Travis Boyd and Andre Burakovsky had the helpers.

Alex Ovechkin added some insurance at 8:34 with his 16th goal of the season, assisted by Nic Dowd and Wilson. For Wilson, it was his eighth point in his sixth game of the season since his return from his suspension.

The Caps would go on to win 3-1 despite being outshot 32-20 by the Red Wings. Braden Holtby stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced in the win for a .969 save percentage. The Caps take on the New York Rangers Saturday at 2 from The Garden.
