Capitals Top 10 Moments of the Regular Season: #1 Alex Ovechkin’s 600th Goal

Alex Ovechkin has acheived milestone after milestone in his 13-year NHL career. Two big ones occured in the span of two and a half months: winning the Stanley Cup and just recently becoming a father. Before those occured and even before his 1,000th game came Ovechkin’s 600th goal. It is that moment that earns the top moment in our list.

Date: March 12, 2018

Result: Capitals 3, Jets 2 OT

Ovechkin entered the night with 598 goals, his last one coming in the Stadium Series. He wasted no time indicating that this ordinary Monday night would become extrodinary. Ovechkin struck on the power play at 4:35 in the first period to give the Capitals the early lead. The Jets tied it 58 seconds later on a goal from Nikolaj Ehlers.

Early in the second period at 3:53 was when the big 600 occured. In a scrum in front of the net, Tom Wilson was stopped but saw Ovechkin and softly passed the puck to him. Ovi tried to push it through three times, the third one being the charm that put the Capitals ahead 2-1 and set off the sold out crowd at Capital One Arena.

Patrik Laine, ironically a player who looked up to Ovechkin growing up, tied the game at 5:02 in the third period. Evgeny Kuznetsov would win it late in overtime on a breakaway goal.

That completes our list of the Top 10 moments of the regular season. Do you agree with our list? Do you think we could’ve had another moment in place of another? Let us know in the comments!
