Start of a New Season: Capitals Training Camp

The Capitals are officially back! Friday was day one of the Caps training camp, signally the end of summer fun! Much of the attention was given to the goaltenders as the teams began the process of shifting the focus to new coaches and new players.

The Capitals and Hershey Bears were split into three squads for testing and practice.

Up first were a number of the Bears and future prospects for the team on the Group White. Making a splash were Braden Holtby and Vitek Vanecek- number one goalies for the Caps and Bears:

The first squad spent some time working on corner drills- mostly led by TJ Oshie

John Carlson was missing today as he is off with an minor injury. Coach was not clear if Carley would return on Saturday.

Next up was the Red Group with goaltenders Pheonix Copley and Ilya Samsanov. Both are in the Capitals roster but only one will receive the number two tag.

Lars Eller was missing from this squad- also dealing with a minor injury. All eyes were on Andre Burakovsky. He will need a new contract at the end of the season and what he does at camp and the first few games will be indicators of his future.

The third squad- the Blue Group brought forth the captain and his Russian buddies! They skated off to the Arlington rink to warm up a bit on their own before returning to skate drills.

It was clear that there is great comradely on this team as they poked fun at each other and laughed through the skate test and practice. Sergie Shumakov was missing from the group as he works to resolve some visa issues.

Nic Dowd is looking for his place on the team- perhaps as the Jay Beagle replacement. Of course Chandler Stephenson would like that posting too!

There was something about Tom Wilson today – he had a new leadership maturity about him.

And some leftover shots… including TJ Oshie winning Fan Player of the DAY!!
