Now were on to the fun stuff! Here are the top 10 moments of the playoffs beginning with round one, Game 5 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Leaving Capital One Arena eariler in the week on a Sunday night, just after the Metro closed and the Caps dropping an overtime contest to the Blue Jackets there was a sinking feeling occuring. The loss was the Capitals second in a row, both on home ice, in overtime. We know what happened the year before when the Capitals got off to a poor start. Now it was occuring almost a year later but in an earlier round.

Alex Ovechkin assured that the Caps would come back to DC for a Game 5 with the series tied at 2. He was right. The Caps survied a double-overtime Game 3 and got the goal they needed from Lars Eller. The goal gave them confidence for a dominant Game 4. Now the Caps headed back home looking to keep the momentum going.

Date: April 21, 2018

Round: First

Game: 5 (Series tied 2-2)

Result: Capitals 4, Blue Jackets 3 OT

Things looked bad for the home team once again as Matt Calvert scored a shorthanded goal midway through the opening period. Nicklas Backstrom knotted the sore over three minutes later off of a weird bounce that landed just behind Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky.

The Capitals jumped out in front with a snipe from Evgeny Kuznetsov. Columbus tied it just over a minute later on a spinning breakaway goal by Calvert for his second of the game. Late in the second, the Caps went ahead as T.J. Oshie deflected in a one-timer blast from John Carlson. The Blue Jackets tied it early in the third on a goal from Oliver Bjorkstrand.

Backstrom would win it in overtime deflecting in a shot from Dmitry Orlov to give the Capitals the 4-3 win and a 3-2 series lead with the chance to close out the series in Columbus. This wasn’t the first time this season Nicky came up clutch against the CBJ.
