One of the biggest trends in sports journalism is subscription-based websites. Earlier this year, Ben Standig, Todd Dybas and Brian McNally launched The Sports Capitol and now The Athletic is making their presence known in D.C. this fall. Tarik El-Bashir, formerly of NBC Sports Washington, and who spent time on the Capitals and Redskins beats, is joining The Athletic to cover the Washington Redskins.
We spoke with El-Bashir a few weeks ago and he let it slip that things were changing. Then Tarik tweeted out a teaser, after dropping the @NBCSWashington in his bio, with a picture of his notebooks, recorder and laptop; the three journalism essentials. Behind the laptop you could see a sign with the words “seat reserved for:” that kind of looked like the lettering from the Redskins logo. On the laptop was the homepage for The Athletic.
Big things coming. Stay tuned… pic.twitter.com/hhdXDcgnTg

Tarik covered the Capitals for The Washington Post from 2005-2012 before going to the Redskins beat for four seasons. He returned to the Capitals beat for NBC Sports Washington in 2012 where he was named the “Captials Insider” for two seasons.
One thing we’ll miss is hearing him on the Capitals Faceoff podcast with JJ Regan, where they sometimes jabbed and poked fun at each other. JJ will come out with some intro for Tarik, like he’s the sidekick. Pretty hilarious!
Prior to making his presence felt in the DMV, El-Bashir interned and covered the Islanders for the New York Times. He received his degree in communcations at Howard University.
We wish Tarik all the best in this new adventure. We look forward to seeing you back around Capital One Arena or MedStar Capitals Iceplex again.
