On April 1, Easter Sunday 2018, Alex Ovechkin took the ice at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh for his 1,000th NHL game, the first player to do so playing his entire career for the Washington Capitals. It was ironic the occasion came in Pittsburgh of all places but the Capitals dominated on enemy ice. It set the stage for even greater things to come. The Capitals shut out the Penguins 3-1 behind Philipp Grubauer.
Date: April 1, 2018
Result: Capitals 3, Penguins 1
Additionally, the win over the Penguins gave the Capitals their third straight Metropolitan Division title. T.J. Oshie got the scoring started at 6:25. Dmitry Orlov lit the lamp in the second period at 13:46, while Tom Wilson got a tally 23 seconds into the third period.
With this game, Philipp Grubauer found himself in the lead for the bid to start Game 1 of the Stanley Cup playoffs with his impressive performance. He only allowed a goal to Patric Hornqvist but would stop 36-of-37 shots with a .973 save percentage.
It was a complete team win and it would be a preview of even bigger things to come in that barn a month later.
What will be moment #2?! Tune in next week to find out!
