The Caps are Back! The Caps are BACK …. okay, some are back

We finally had a chance to spend more than a few minutes at MedStar Capitals Iceplex aka Kettler) today and get a closer look at those Capitals who are participating in the unofficial #campnemo. Mark Nemish, the team strength and conditioning coach, has been on the ice with those players showing up for a bit of pre-training camp preparation.

So far, Shane Gersich and Tobias Geisser, who are hoping for a spot on the Caps roster or a least a call-up this season, have been joined off-and-on by Evgeny Kuznetsov, John Carlson, Nathan Walker, Lars Eller, and Pheonix Copley; who replaces Gurbauer as number two goaltender. More players are bound to show up over the next couple of weeks to get themselves ready for camp and the preseason.

On this day, we had a chance to see six of those guys working and encouraging each other. There was some nifty movement in the corners and some challenging of Copley in the net. No real pressure to perform, more just to skate the rust off and get the feel of that winning ice again.

Eller was great to watch. He has such a smooth stride across the ice, pushing out on his skates as he goes. Today he looked like he was taking longer strides as part of their speed drills. Check him out on the sprint this morning.

Also on the ice were some visiting players from other leagues (including a high school team or two) and even other teams.

We will have more coverage on Friday. Our goal is to be there every day, if possible, to bring you great videos and photos. Be user you are following us on Twiter and Facebook so you can see our real time posts as well!

One more for the road… Lars Eller’s father, Olaf, who is the head coach for Denmark’s junior ice hockey team (under 20;s) was watching his son from the sidelines.
