It’s Looking a Little Different at MedStar Capitals Ice

At the end of July, MedStar Health and Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) announced that the Capitals training facility would become MedStar Capitals Iceplex as part of an expanded agreement. The signs are changing all around the ice rink located on the top level Ballston Quarter; formerly the Ballston Commons Mall.

Ballston Quarter is undergoing a major renovation and most facilities in the building remain closed. We will have an update before Capitals training camp begins in September, but suffice it to say, it is a bit of a challenge right now to navigate the area with all the construction. The Mall was scheduled for opening in September but we think given what we are seeing, it will be a bit later.

Gone is the old walkway many fans used to get from the Metro to the mall. Gone too is Front Page restaurant where the Caps and fans used grab a table outside for lunch after practice. The walkway will return but not for another year.

The MCI rink, as it is becoming affectionately known, has already replaced most of the Kettler Ice Plex signs. We are seeing modest signs of improvement around the facility as well. Checkout the Capitals logo on their rink. Here are some of the signs from the elevator to the front desk and all around the rink.
