Capitals Top 10 Moments of the Regular Season: #7 Alex Ovechkin’s Opening Night Hat Trick in Ottawa

It was late August and the weather around the DMV was hotter than usual. Then again, it was still the dog days of summer. There was a bit of commotion over at Dulles Airport where we learned that Alex Ovechkin had arrived. Training camp wasn’t even until the following month! .

Ovechkin probably wanted to get out of the August heat just as much as everyone else. Over at the Kettler Capitals cool ice rink, Capitals players began showing up for on-ice workouts to gear up for the upcoming season. Ovechkin’s arrival early arrival signaled a new season, one with a lot of speed and energy.  Ovechkin was flying all over the ice and he looked to be in the best shape of his life. It was also right after Alex and his wife Nastya celebrated their marriage in Moscow.  Turns out after he was dancing shirtless to the song “Rasputin” and the couple returned from their honeymoon, Ovi hit the gym hard. In the first game of the Capitals season, Ovechkin made an immediate impact.

After a long training camp and a few pre-season games, the Capitals were ready for their first game of the season. They headed north to Ottawa for the Senators for their home opener.

Date: October 5, 2017

Result: Capitals 5, Senators 4

Senator’s Chris Wideman opened the scoring, putting the home team ahead 1-0  at 6:25 into the contest before Brett Connolly provided the equalizer less than two minutes later. The Senators responded with two unanswered goals from Mark Stone in the second period and Derick Brassard early in the third to go up 3-1. Then greatness unfolded before everyone’s eyes. Ovechkin went full “beast mode”.

In a play along the boards, Evgeny Kuznetsov stole the puck and quickly fed it to Ovechkin for the one-timer from the office to cut the deficit to one. 1:23 later, tic-tac-toe and another goal for Ovechkin! Tie game.

Ottawa answered with Stone’s second goal of the game. Then just over midway through the third, Ovechkin won the board battle and ripped a shot so quickly that Craig Anderson missed it. He blinked. Ovechkin’s goal was his third of the game. How’s that to start a winning season?!

This game would require not only overtime but a shootout as well. Trailing 1-0, the Russian snipers came through. First Ovechkin and then Kuznetsov for the win.

What will moment #6 be?! Tune in next week to find out!
