Martin Fehervary, a Defenseman with Offensive Presence

Martin Fehervary, drafted as the 46th overall pick in the second round during the 2018 NHL Draft, has been signed by the Capitals to a three-year entry-level contract. The 18-year old defenseman from Bratislava, Slovakia seems to be a good addition to the offensive zone.

The numbers for the young defenseman demonstrate that in addition to being a good defenseman, he will be a great contribution to the offense, like defensemen John Carlson and Dmitry Orlov. For example:

  • Four goals and five assists in 32 games playing for Malmo Redhawks U20 in SuperElite League during the 2016-17, in Sweden, being the defensemen with the highest number of goals;
  • Seven ponts (one goal and six assists) last season, playing for IK Oskarshamn in HockeyAllsvenskan (SWE-2).

Additionally, the Slovak represented Slovakia in the U-20 World Junior Championships in each of the last two years, being named a top-three player and was ranked sixth among European defensemen in NHL Central Scouting.

During the recently concluded Caps Development Camp we had a chance to see his style- which he thinks is very similar to Michal Kempny. He is a good smooth skater who can spend time improving his passing. He is not an overwhelmingly physical player, but we could see him adjusting his play for stronger hits. He may need to add some weight in the coming years before he gets a chance to play for the Hershey Bears.dsc_9992

Fehervary is probably going to play for HV71 of the Swedish Hockey League in the 2018-19 season, a team which he has already played one game with.
