Capitals Summer Gets Busy; More Than Just the Cup

Now that the excitement has died down a bit over the Capitals winning the Stanley Cup– we joke- it’s time to look ahead to some key dates for the NHL:

June 15 first player buyout period begins (last season the buzz was about Brooks Orpik. Doubtful from our perspective)

June 20 Club home opener announced at 1pm

June 21 Regular Season games announced at 5 pm on NHL

June 22-23 is the NHL draft in Texas

June 24 at 12:01 am, Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA) can start talks with other teams

June 25 at 5 pm, qualifying offers need to be made to Restricted Free Agents (RFA)

June 26 at noon, discussions can begin with RFAs that did not receive qualifying offers

June 30 at 5 pm first buyout period ends

July 1 at 12 pm NHL Free Agency Begins

July 1 UFAs Can now sign contracts with teams that don’t hold their signing rights.

July 5 at 5:01 pm deadline for players to elect to go with salary arbitration

July 6 at 5 pm clubs period to elect salary arbitration ends

July 15 at 5 pm, qualifying offers to RFA expire.

August 15 deadline to secure rights for college drafts

From current Caps roster, including Hershey Bear players:

Capitals UFAs this summer are:

Capitals RFAs are:

And the Caps have a money problem. They have some pretty stellar players like John Carlson and Tom Wilson that they either need to lock down quickly or let go to make room for newer players. This is what the current cap status looks like according to CapFriendly.

The Caps negotiators and managers also have to look beyond the current year to the next season when other key players become RFAs and UFAs. Players like Andre Burakovsky, Brett Connolly, Jakub Vrana, Christian Djoos, Chandler Stephenson, and Nathaniel Walker. It is never an easy time of the year. We know we will be on pins and needles the next few weeks.

And don’t forget, Caps Development Camp and Caps Training Camp are just around the corner. And there is that little ceremony in Vegas!

This hockey in June doesn’t give the Caps or us much time to breathe! But we like it!’
