On Thursday and Friday, the Washington Capitals beat the New York Islanders in back-to-back games. Both games raised a lot of attention with the past rivalry these two have with each other. We knew this was going to be an interesting couple of games after renowned instigator Cal Clutterbuck speared Tom Wilson in the “goods” after the whistle, resulting in a minor penalty. Caps made sure to keep their game composed and beat them on the scoreboard, which they did in fashion 7-3 in Brooklyn. One of the biggest upsides from that game was that T.J. Oshie finally broke his curse and scored a goal (twice!). That was his first one since January 31 against the Arizona Coyotes. Glad to see him back on the scoring train again! Philipp Grubauer held his own too with 35 saves on 38 shots. He has been incredible for the club, stepping in while Braden Holtby isn’t doing to hot. Best backup in the league!

Friday’s game was no different, physical and a lot of tension in Capital One Arena this time. Clutterbuck went at it again, stirring the pot. Wilson would respond early to the physical play, but recipient Ross Johnston did not appreciate the ‘love tap’. They dropped the gloves and set the tone early. This continued throughout the night. Holtby made his appearance after a small reset and came up with a win, saving 22 of 25 shots. This game did not come so easy for both Evgeni Kuznetsov (upper-body) and Matt Niskanen (lower-body), who were hurt last night. Niskanen returned to the game a few minutes after taking a hard shot to the leg from Ryan Pulock at the point. He seemed fine for the rest of the match. Kuznetsov, however, did not return to the game. He was in obvious pain in the wrist/hand area. He was slashed in the hand by Thomas Hickey and tripped up by Jaroslav Halak, sending Kuzy crashing into the boards hand first. Losing him for an extended period of time would be a crushing blow to the Caps lineup. We are hoping for the best and waiting on the word.
