Michael Kempny, the 27 year old defenseman, was traded from the Chicago Blackhawks to the Washington Capitals Monday and I flat out love the move for both sides. As a Hawks and Caps fan, I might have more of an interesting perspective on this then most people. The Hawks are not having the best of seasons. They are really struggling this year and that 7-1 win over the Caps the other night could really be the highlight of their season as the playoffs don’t look likely for them.
Kempny is really a great all around D man. He does a lot of the little things really well and knows how to move the puck quickly. The way he sees the ice is also really something on it’s own too. He was in the top four for the most part with the Hawks playing with guys like Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook. If the Caps do give him a legit chance with some big ice time, I do think he could produce well them.
The Caps seem to be remodeling their Defense core right before the trade deadline to gear up for the playoffs. For this deal, the Caps gave up a conditional third-round pick to the Hawks in 2018. He’ll be a restricted free agent this summer so he needs to show his value or he’ll be off to another team come that time.
We could see some more moves to come. The Caps have some adjustments to make for that playoff run.
