The Washington Capitals have lost their last three games, two of which they played at home. Mel was in the house to get photos for you. Unfortunately there aren’t many happy moments from the games; however, we love us some player pics.
This represented the third loss in a row for the Caps, having lost to the NJ Devils upon their return from the Bye Week. Given that there was some degree of struggle before the Bye Week, we aren’t too inclined to blame it on the break. After three games one can hardly stay with the “rust” excuse.
The Caps played the Montreal Canadiens on Friday January 19. It was their second post-bye week game and a back-to-back as well. Karl Alzner was there…
In that game John Carlson scored first for the Caps with a swift slap shot. Ovi and Kuzy got the assists on that one.
Lars Eller has a beauty of a goal but it was not enough for a win.
Caps fell 3-1 with Pacioretty scoring twice.
Andre Burakovsky had some time on the ice after being out sick and then sitting a game out after the break. He had one penalty and one shot for the evening. We have our concerns about TJ Oshie who had one shot and was a -1 for the night.
Tom Wilson spent time in the box for fighting and unsportsmanlike conduct.
Grubi was in the net. He didn’t get as much help defending the net as he should have. Other then that, he was great.he made 23 saves out of 25 shots.
Next up on the schedule at home were the Philadelphia Flyers. The Caps had a day in between for a quick practice at Kettler before an early afternoon game on Sunday.
The Caps looked stronger and faster in this game. However, the Flyers got on the board first in the second period. In to save the day was Alex Ovechkin with a slap shot past goalie Elliott to tie up the game. He was assisted by Carlson and TJ Oshie. Whew – Oshie!!
Ovi likely had some inspiration from young Will Cody who was there with the Make a Wish Foundation.
Unfortunately, the Caps would end up in a tie-game situation, only to loose in the overtime.
Burakovsky had two shots in this game and he seemed to play with a bit more intensity. He continues to adjust after his injury and we are hopeful that we will see a greater improvement in his game by Thursday when the Caps next play.
Elliott was stoic in the net – he managed to stop some amazing opportunistic shots by the boys in RED. But then again, so was Holtby.
Coach Trotz split the Dynamic Duo – Ovi and Backstrom. We disagree but then we don’t get paid the big bucks to get the Caps on a winning track. Ovi Scored. Backy had four shots.
And about Oshie. He did have an assist on the Ovechkin goal. He had three shots, spent time in the box, and was a -1 again. There was some chatter on social media that he just doesn’t seem himself. We know that it takes a bit to recover from a concussions but we are worried that it is taking so long to bounce back.
The Caps took away a point due to the tie game. They remain the number one team in the Metro Division and have a decent enough lead. That said, they need to get past OT games and find a way to have a more certain lead in the game.
The Caps play the Panthers on Thursday in Sunrise. The Panthers have been shooting machines lately, although with a mixed bag of results. The Caps better be prepared to bring their defensive play with them!
