it was a good night in DC at the Capital One Arena. The Capitals we love came back to play the kind of game we get excited about. They took and kept the lead, ending with a win of 5-2 win over the New Jersey Devils. ANNNDDDDD the lead in the Metro Division.

Tom Wilson moved to the third line and Devante Smith-Pelly stayed on the top line. Andre Burakovsky was a healthy scratch, probably because he is under-performing again, along with Madison Bowey.  Chandler Stephenson was back after illness. The starting lineup:

Ovechkin Backstrom Smith-Pelly
Vrana  Kuznetsov  Oshie
Connolly  Eller  Wilson
Stephenson  Beagle  Chaisson

Orlov – Niskanen
Orpik – Carlson
Djoos – Chorneywatermarked27(2017-12-30-2118)It was kind of cool to see the emerging superstar and first overall draft pick Nico Hischier. And Brian Boyle who is an inspiration to anyone fighting a debilitating illness. That’s all we want to say on the positive side about the Devils. They are a fast moving-hard playing team and they brought it to DC on Saturday.

First period got rolling with a sweet goal by Tom Wilson. Christian Djoos lit up Twitter with his move behind the net to feed the puck to Willy. And to prove he really had something to do with the first goal – Djoos went ahead and scored the second goal for the Caps from a tic-tac-toe from Ovi to Backy to Djoos. Before the end of the period the Devil’s John Rourke would get on the board for them. 2-1 at the end.

And then there was the Marcus Johansson remembrance and “Thanks for the Memories” video. More pictures here. (video by Chris Cleveland)

Second period the Caps kept the rush on with John Carlson scoring off a pass from Backstrom. This is his fourth goal for the season. Goalie Corey Schneider continued to fill up the net, making it difficult to get more goals past him. Period ended 3-1 Caps.

And then there was the third period. Things got exciting with lots of crashing the Devils net. Matt Niskenen slammed one in to make it 4-1. Oh and that would be Ovechkin’s third assist of the night! The Devils weren’t done getting one more in the net but neither were the Caps. Backstrom took advantage of the empty net for a final 5-2 win!!!

We liked what we saw tonight. Lets hope 2018 brings more games like this!!!

Happy New Year everyone.
