Backstrom Bags Third Star of the Week

2017 Home Opener 225

After a stellar week netting three goals, and six assists in four games, the Capitals own Nicklas Backstrom earns the NHL’s third star of the week.  The reserved and ever humble Backstrom is frequently referred to as the league’s most underrated player; however, he has been proving himself to Capitals in fans since joining the team in 2006.

His performance over the past week was stellar earning him a League leading 11 points for the year. Backstrom’s hot and his streak started on when he found the back of the net to give the Capitals an early lead over the Lightning on 10/9. He was a key contributor to Ovechkin’s eighth goal against the Penguins. Perhaps most impressive was the four points – a goal and three assists — he earned against the New Jersey Devils who are leading the Metro Division. He managed to maintain his momentum on Saturday in Philadelphia when he notched his third goal of the year mid-way through the second period. This game also marked the 19th career 4+ point game – tying Ovechkin for the number two spot for this record.

Backstrom, who centers the Capitals top line, which included Alex Ovechkin until this year, seems to have adjusted to the line change that now has him flanked by Andre Burakovsky and T.J. Oshie. This top line combination accounts for 11 of the Capitals 62 total points.

The Capitals return to the Capital One Arena on Tuesday, 10/17 where Backstrom hopes to extend his streak against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
