Caps Find No Advantage Against Pens

The night started with a few line changes: Nate Schmidt was benched and Mike Weber sent in his place. Kris Letang was out for his little suspension and Eric Fehr was out with an undisclosed injury.

It only took less than three minutes for J-Dawg Beagle to score one on Matt Murray, assisted by Tom Wilson and Taylor Chorney. The Pens weren’t having any of it and tipped one in on Braden Holtby.

This series gets stranger by the minute. NHL couldn’t figure out who had the goal. First it was Trevor Daley then it was Sidney Crosby and finally Daley. All this while Milbury and company continued to drool over the Pens (shocking we know.)

T.J. Oshie was a target this period and sustained a hit that bloodied his beautiful face and sent Carl Hagelin to the box for interference. Yea right.

Hagelin charged out the box to the net and flipped over Holtby after a hit by Dmitry Orlov and somehow Matt Niskanen was called for hooking…It didn’t take long for Patric Hornqvist to the box for tripping. With six seconds left in the Pens penalty, Jason Chimera would join Matt in the box for tripping Crosby. 4 on 3 for a couple seconds and back to 4 on 4.  Four penalties, 16 shots by the Caps, and a tied game as the period ended.

Second period continued with the frustration growing on the Caps bench. A little back and forth with penalties, a goal by Matt Cullen and a beauty by our favorite D-man John Carlson. As Caps confidence grew, Pens frustration emerged leading to a tussle between Tom Wilson and Ian Cole. The period seemed to fly by, ending with the teams on a 4 on 4 and tied score, 2-2.

Back at the third with a minute or so 4 on 4. SOG evened out and the teams started the game each with a chance to win it. Fantastic action by the Caps in front of Murray. The Caps kept the puck in the offensive zone. Oshie had a great shot from his knees, which although snazzy still couldn’t cross past Murray.

Crosby had the misfortune of crossing Ovi and was seen slamming his stick on the walls down the tunnel. He returned a couple minutes later, huffing and puffing.

With 3:38 left in the period Karl Alzner was sent to the box for high sticking Crosby who fell on the ice, grabbing his face. No embellishment call in case you were wondering. Caps kill off the PP and don’t even allow a shot by the Pens.

On to overtime in which the Caps outshot the Pens and the Pens Hornqvist scored the GWG.

Back to DC. Don’t give up hope friends.
