Caps Third Period Surge Not Enough to Beat LA

Tonight, the Washington Capitals took on the LA Kings at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. This was the first game back in LA for Mike Richards and Justin Williams. After downing the Anaheim Ducks in a shootout on Monday night, Braden Holtby got the start again for the Caps. Jonathan Quick got the start for the Kings. Michael Latta, Stanislav Galiev and Nate Schmidt were the Caps scratches again.

PERIOD 1-
Well that escalated quickly…
Yet again, the Caps were in the hole early by allowing the opposing team to score first. They seem to enjoy their trips to the penalty box so they kept that trend up too. Holts had some awesome saves, but could not stop them all. The Caps lack of offense combined with the severe lack of defense allowed the Kings to take a 3-0 lead early in the game. LA had 14 shots on goal to the 6 the Caps had.

PENALTIES-Jay Beagle called for tripping, Evgeny Kuznetsov called for high sticking, Mike Richards called for slashing, Nick Shore called for slashing, Mike Weber called for fighting, and Dwight King called for fighting.e

GOALS- Vincent Lecavalier scored, assisted by Tanner Pearson, Jake Muzzin scored, assisted by Tanner Pearson, and Milan Lucic scored, assisted by Jeff Carter.

SCORE-Caps down, 0-3

PERIOD 2-Sloppy Second

The Caps picked up the pace early in the second period. However, LA had some very impressive and extensive offensive zone time which seemed to dampen the little bit of energy the Caps had. The Caps spent most of the second in their own zone. Tom Wilson tried to get the boys amped by fighting Kyle Clifford, but the ensuing haymakers did more to Wilson’s face than they did the Caps confidence.

PENALTIES-Tom Wilson and Kyle Clifford both called for fighting, each getting a five minute majors.

GOALS-None.

SCORE-Caps still down, 0-3

PERIOD 3-The ties that bind

This is the period that Caps have been trying to play all game. They had 10 shots on goal before the nine minute mark. The Caps had some excellent offensive zone pressure. They finally punctured Quick when they got a good garbage goal from Oshie. Some intense pressure and smart passing got the Caps their second goal and second wind for the good guys. With the ice tilted in their favor, the Caps added another goal to tie it late in the third to take it to overtime.

PENALTIES-Dwight King called for holding, and Mike Weber called for holding.

GOALS-TJ Oshie scored his 20th of the season, assisted by Marcus Johansson, Nicklas Backstrom scored his 18th goal of the season, assisted by Alex Ovechkin, and Dmitry Orlov scored his 8th goal of the season, assisted by Justin Williams.

SCORE-Caps and Kings tied, 3-3

OVERTIME-After knocking Drew Doughty down with his power shot, Ovi almost ends it about 40 seconds in to OT but is stopped by Quick who was deep in his crease. LA tried the same but was denied by Holtby. There was a lot of very fast back and forth, up and down the ice before Jeff Carter went top shelf on a sprawling Holtby to give the Kings the victory.

SCORE-Caps lose, 3-4.

The Caps lost their 14th game of the season. Womp womp. This was actually a much closer game at the end than anyone who watched the first two periods would have thought. The Caps erased a three goal deficit to force overtime, and then gain a point. For those of us who were capable of staying awake, that third period was a treat to see.

Caps are now 49-13-4 with 103 points.

The Caps get to say “Hey!” to their old teammate Joel Ward in their next game on Saturday against the Sharks in San Jose. This is another late night game with a 10:30pm start time for us on the East Coast.
