Introducing Our Newest Photographer:Mel

Friends- we are growing!!  As we strive to bring you quality coverage of the Washington Capitals and local hockey events, we are adding quality reporters, editors, and photographers to the staff. Today we want to introduce you to our newest member, Mel Abernethy. Now we have double the coverage at games and practice. Please welcome her and look for her pictures, along with Brittney’s to capture the best Caps moments.

Hi Caps fans!  My name is Melonie but feel free to just call me Mel and I am a caps fan from the olden days of the cap center and watching practices at Mt Vernon ice rink. I have always wanted to write about caps hockey but got sidetracked by my career as a boat captain. I’ve always photographed the caps and love sharing my photos with everyone.

I discovered Friends in Cold Places through Twitter and followed along. Since I couldn’t go to every practice at Kettler I love the daily updates and pictures.  When there was a tweet asking do you love hockey? And like to write about?! Well, I took that leap to message Maggie about my passion for writing and photography …along with my love for caps hockey…and that’s all it took..

Next home game, I met Maggie and her daughter Britney and we tandem photographed warm ups. I knew I was in the right place.

I look forward to getting to know everyone and sharing my experiences about how much I love caps hockey . Stay tuned fellow caps fans. Much more to come!!

  1. Mel is the best! She got me into hockey by taking me to see the Skipjacks in Baltimore in the early 1990’s. She has always been a talented photographer, especially when it comes to her Caps! Good luck with your new endeavor, Mel!
